Why I became a luxury wedding cake designer

Some people assume that wedding cake designers have always loved baking, maybe even studied some kind of patisserie along the way…..but not me. In all honestly, I never had much interest in baking until I had my first child 12 years ago.

But first, let’s go back a little further…

When I think about it, I guess it all goes back to school. I was always destined to end up in a creative role. When I think about the subjects I loved, they were always arty subjects. Whilst my friends were opting for Computing and Sciences for their GCSE’s, I was choosing Art and Drama. When it came to my A-levels it was Art, Theatre Studies and English literature – not a STEM subject in sight! I think I was naturally drawn to the subjects that allowed me to express myself, rather than those based on fact and logic.

After leaving school I found myself in a typical call centre job to gain some work experience. I quickly realised that of all the departments within the business, I was most excited my the Marketing department. So I enrolled in an evening course and over the following 3 years, gained a Diploma in Marketing and found myself in the Marketing team. I worked my way up but soon found that after having a family I no longer had the passion for the job that I used to.

So I quit my corporate job after my second daughter was born and took some time to figure out what I wanted to do. Whilst doing this I’d been baking their birthday cakes, christening cakes etc and found that I really enjoyed it and was quite good at it! I enrolled in some courses to learn the basics and then practised, practised, practised!

When I was confident enough to do so I set up my own cake business and took on bookings from people in the local area, mainly for celebration cakes at first. I loved the flexibility it allowed me in terms of working around the children and the school holidays. And I loved being back in a role that allowed me to be creative. I made my first wedding cake back in 2014 and soon realised that this is what I wanted to specialise in. I fell in love with weddings when I planned my own wedding 15 years ago and it was so lovely to be back in that magical environment and be involved in the most important day of a couples lives.

Now, I only offer wedding cakes. It’s what I truly love and every day I feel so grateful and humbled that a couple chooses me to be a part of their wedding day. And as a cake designer that specialises in modern, bespoke, luxury wedding cakes, I continue to use my creativity every day.

If you’d like to find out more about me and the cakes I offer, head to my about me  page or take a look at my gallery of work.

Thank you as always for taking the time to read my blog.
