When I first met Jon and Jo (who recently tied the knot at the beautiful Clock Barn in Whitchurch) back in 2019 at a wedding fair, I knew I’d love making their wedding cake.
They were such a lovely couple; really chilled and relaxed and absolute foodies! The cake flavours were a huge part in their decision-making process when it came to their cake.
Unfortunately, like many couples planning a wedding at that time, they had to postpone their original date of December 2020 due to COVID restrictions but also because of a surprise/wonderful lockdown addition to their family!
Because of Covid restrictions, we held their wedding consultation over Zoom and I delivered their cake samples the day before so they could try their flavour choices as we were chatting. The consultation was a great opportunity to find out a bit more about them and their wedding and what direction they wanted to go in for their cake. They tried their samples and there were lots of pleasing sounds coming through the speaker of my laptop as they tucked in! Following the consultation, I sent Jo and Jon a personalised sketch of their cake with all of the details we had discussed in relation to their flavour choices, venue information etc.
Fast forward to 2021 when things were looking a lot more promising and the world was slowly getting back to normal. I spent the weekend before their Monday Clock Barn wedding baking their 3 flavour choices; a seriously indulgent chocolate mud cake, a sweet and moist sticky toffee cake and a rather more grown up coffee and walnut sponge. All encased in a light and fluffy Swiss meringue buttercream. The couple had chosen to have hints of gold in their wedding theme and Jo had a love of bumble bees; both of which were incorporated in their wedding cake design, with rich gold drips cascading down parts of the cake and honeycomb effect shards.
As I made the drive from my home cake studio to the Clock Barn in Whitchurch, I felt so excited for them that their special day was finally happening. As I approached Clock Barn, I took in the beautiful countryside scenery surrounding this intimate venue. And all the quirky and rustic features that this venue had to offer. The grand clock tower standing guard outside of the gates, the beautifully maintained gardens and the rustic beams, wrapped in fairy lights. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t being kind when I arrived – it was a brisk, wet and windy December morning but stepping into the barn, I immediately felt warm and cosy.
I stacked their 4 tier luxury wedding cake with all of the hustle and bustle of wedding preparations going on in the background and took a minute to wonder around this lovely venue. The Christmas tree was twinkling away in the bar area, mulled cider was slow cooking on the bar and the chairs were being set out for the ceremony. The lovely Dan from South East Wedding Photography was capturing all of the details inside and out before the main event got underway.
Jo and Jon, thank you for choosing me to make your wedding cake; I never take for granted how lucky I am to be part of a couples most special of days. I’m so pleased you finally got your happy ever after and hope you had the most amazing day. Fingers crossed there was some cake left over for you to enjoy the following day!
