As we near the end of 2023, I wanted to reflect on the designs and styles of cakes that have been popular this year and what I think we’ll see more of next year.
What I think we’ll see more of in 2024:
- Flower meadows – As beautiful and abundant floral displays and installations continued to feature heavily in wedding styling this year, I think we’ll see more of the flower meadow trend surrounding a couples wedding cake in 2024. Flower meadows are a beautiful way of tying in your florals to your cake design and really elevating your cake, making it a stunning focal point at your reception.
- Deep tiers – As some couples strive for a more contemporary cake design, I foresee more ‘deep’ / ‘tall’ tiers in 2024. These tall tiers tend to be narrower in width, adding additional height to a cake, really creating the wow factor! Deeper tiers obviously cater for more portions as well, so often means less tiers are needed, depending on guest numbers.
- Texture and movement: Whether this be a fondant or buttercream cake, I think the textured effects that we’ve seen over the last couple of years will continue in 2024. It’s a great way for a cake artist to draw in inspiration from other elements of a couples wedding, such as dress fabrics, stationery elements, architectural influences form the couples venue etc.
- Vegan cakes – As the general trend in Vegan food consumption continues and more and more consumers are looking to make more environmentally conscious decisions, (a recent study has shown that over the past 5 years, the term ‘veganism’ has increased by 580% in Google search!), I predict that wedding cake makers will receive more and more requests to cater for vegan wedding guests. I have tried and tested several vegan recipes over the past few years and want to reassure couples that vegan cakes can be just as delicious as non-vegan cakes!
- Lambeth style – the lambeth trend has taken the wedding cake scene by storm this year and I think it’s very much set to continue in 2024! These intricately piped designs are normally found on buttercream cakes but can also be adapted for those couples wanting a fondant finish.
